Thanks for your questions and feedback. You're correct. As of 2.2 permissions for "student" and "teacher" are fixed. You can assign these roles into multiple Liferay roles. Also passing / failing does mean, that someone with "teacher" role must go and approve (ie. grade) the results from gradebook.

Now, being said that, we've just submitted Valamis 2.3 for Marketplace QA review. It no longer has fixed roles, but has more granular permission engine leveraging Liferay's resource-action permission model. We've as well added automated assesment of pass/fail, based on user set rubic.

So I feel that Valamis 2.3 is much better suited for project and goals you're trying to do. Hopefully QA will be short and you'll be able to download it.
