Sorry Hitoshi...

Was a long time coming, but I'm now top poster... Hitoshi will have to sit at #2 for awhile, but actually I'd be okay if he came back and knocked me of the top, he is such a great guy...

Hey Dave, thanks for all of your help over the years, and thanks for contributing your time and knowledge to our community!

We need a special tee shirt to commemorate this. Standby!

Congratulations. And belated congratulations to Hitoshi as well, thanks to all of the diligent and patient answerers here.

Actually, I think a new category above "Legend" is in order (or a few?). What else can you achieve (other than an extra T-Shirt) after 1000 posts? (hint hint)

Yeah we have several that are > 1000 posts now, it would be fun to come up with more levels -- at that high a level, it is unlikely to make people start posting "Thanks" to every thread just to reach it - it would take forever emoticon

Anyway, Olaf I recommend you come up with more levels!

Also, i'm still really hoping we can add more stackoverflow-like features as part of the move to dev.liferay.com (which I hope can happen before 2015 is over).

actually, Hitoshi used to have 8000 posts. It seems some got deleted, so that he's now below that line. He definitely was the first to pass (or reach) 8000 posts

Wasn't me emoticon

Although I had thought how that would be a much easier way to slide into the #1 slot... emoticon

silly aside for the moment: I am using dev.liferay.com more and more for clear guidance in some areas like maven and much other. How the 'prosumer' thing proceeds there including stackoverflow-like approaches seems wise to distill/focus while encouraging participation.

Does it encourage general participation though? Not sure myself, just asking...

I mean, there are folks in the forum who respond a lot, including Liferay employees. Many of us have a vested interest, though, and we're not doing it for points but probably more for community (or because it's our job emoticon).

I guess James could tell us more, but I'm guessing it's like a bell curve for participation, few newcomers with very low counts, few old timers with very high counts, but lots of folks in the middle somewhere.

I just wonder how much a point system encourages participation. SO is so large, I wonder if a point score actually means anything to anyone. I think my current point score is like 20 or something. Does it mean anything if I get it to 100 considering what everyone else has? I certainly don't answer just because I want points (especially since I don't know that they have any value), I post because I know something and want to share.

Maybe that's why I have a hard time seeing an SO-like system as an answer for increasing participation, perhaps because I don't see the value in it. But then I'm just a coder, and who expects us to know how to social engineer a group emoticon

I like the SO system not so much for the points earned or the implied credibility for a topic (my tag score for cocoa is 1/3 of that for Liferay - it was a single answer as opposed to >500 answers for Liferay) but for the general flow: You first enter your question, then it's tagged. Forums require you to find your way through somebody else's hierarchy of topics, nobody (well, not many) can reorder in Forums, while editing tags is really easy.

Screw gamification, make writing, editing, finding and answering the questions slick. Remove the hierarchy. My 2 Cent (Euro, of course)

Does anyone know what happened to Hitoshi? A couple of us around the office are wondering what he's been up to.

My sense of Hitoshi is that he is a really good, caring and smart guy. I very much am in thanks of those like Hitoshi who has contributed so much to others via Liferay forums. For anyone who reads this, please be more thankful to those who take a lot of their own time to care to solve the problems of others on these forums. That said we each have only so much time in the day to choose the best path for ourselves and others.

If only the commodity was good will instead of money. Of course everyone needs money, not too much, not too little.
