Roadmap/timelines for Liferay 7.0 and 7.1

Hi all,

Is there a proposed roadmap/timeline for Liferay 7.0 and 7.1 available? I would be good to get some idea of a release date for these products. We currently holding back on some roll outs because we would rather just do it fully on the 7 release. Preferably 7.1 emoticon but I don't think we can wait that long. We need to decide if we shoul just go with 6.2 or wait a little longer.

thanks

You're asking for the roadmap, together with the timeline. From this I'm implying that you don't know what's on the roadmap that you absolutely need. And for this reason alone, my advice is to go with 6.2. Evaluate 7.0 once it's out. There will be a migration path and documentation on how to update your site .

If this isn't enough, here are some more reasons: 7.0 won't be out very soon. It sounds like you can wait quite a bit (as you even mention 7.1) with the start of your project. In that case you don't seem to need the resulting portal at all - so don't bother (Sorry if this sounds harsh - I'm trying to over-stress the point to make my opinion undoubtly clear).

Yes, there is a roadmap for 7.0, I'm not sure how reliable or public it is, but there are some milestones already out (you'll find them when you look for Jorge Ferrer's blogs) These blog articles might also give some hints on the remaining milestone builds before 7.0 will be out. Unfortunately I don't have anything to point to for the roadmap, but someone else might step in.

I'm not deeply involved with planning or engineering for the next version, thus I don't dare quoting any date that I've heard being discussed - it'd be wrong anyways. I'd argue that you should do the same. The only thing that you can be sure of is that 7.0 won't be out within the next few months. If it is: Party. But don't wait for something that you don't even know what it can do. This, by the way, applies to any unknown future software releases, not just to Liferay. The next version will always look brighter, better and more colorful. If the current version can do what you need: Go! Use the current version. Prepare for frequent upgrades - either minor or major. You should be able to do that anyway.

Again, I might have exaggerated a bit, this is purely to give you a clear answer rather than a typical "it depends".

Thanks for the reply. We know what Liferay does and how it works. We have tried out 7.0 too and so there are no surprises but you don't want to start dev and then release into production with beta software. We were hoping it could be close to being released in the next two months or so. By the time we were done.

The project is an internal project which we could bump for a couple of months and keep the existing solution for a bit longer until 7.0 is released. But to make the decision the more info we have the better. From your reply it looks like there is no public timeline for the release.

thanks

Good - thanks for the clarification. I'll stand by my drastic answer, if only for others that read here. And it seems that often people are waiting for the next version. I dare saying that it'll not be within the next 2 months. I don't dare being more exact - specifically because I'm not really involved with the release planning and it would only be hear-say anyway.

If you're wondering about using a supported version, you might want to consider EE - this is supported for 5-7 years after release, decoupling you from the actual release dates for CE. You're free to upgrade any time, but will still be on a supported version until you do find the time.

There might be a public timeline, but due to my ignorance to it I can't point to it. Or there might not be one. I neither know nore care. Somebody else might step in. Or Jorge's blog posts might give hints as of the current status.

Oh, and there's a 6.2 CE GA3 around the corner. That's as far as I dare giving information on future releases.
