As promised, new improved Valamis eLearning for Liferay was just released. Ahead of schedule. I think it's a good occasion to celebrate little. Our dev team enjoys a cake with every successful release and they have really earned it. Congratulations!

Thanks for your positive feedback
I would recommend that you split up the book to chapters. Author each chapter as a SCORM package (2004 4th edition recommended). After this you can load the course to Valamis and track how the users are reading. If you're using commercial authoring tool, you can use it to implement the assessments or you can use Valamis Quiz / Question management to do the same.
