Why PortletMVC4Spring uses jspx?

Hi all!
I'm curious about the use of jspx files inside the PortletMVC4Spring project. Why Liferay uses this type of file if is really old and there's no info about how to handle it?For example, I haven't been able to use system out <% System.out.println( "" );%> because it breaks the well-formed xml. Or it has problems to use certain bootstrap styles.Can I switch the file type to Jsp?
