You've heard of the Digg effect, but the same is true of the "Google" effect. We're celebrating Sesame Street's 40th anniversary today. Go to www.google.com and you'll see a nice reference to Big Bird. Click on it, and you'll see a reference to www.sesamestreet.org -> happily running on Liferay.

I know that some people are suggesting using the setenv.sh script to control JVM settings for tomcat.Notably I see adding JMX configurations this way, among other things.Be careful what you add to this script as some things, like JMX settings, will break the ability to use the shutdown scripts. The setenv.sh script is called regardless of startup or shutdown of tomcat. If you add JMX...

Probably one of the top 5 questions I get asked on consulting gigs is, "How do I connect to an external database?" The wiki was a bit out of date, so I made a new one for Liferay 5.2. Wiki: Connecting to an External Database and Building Services Against It I'm sorry that it is not prettier and not more well-organized. I'll have to pretty it up later, and make it more...

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you need to deploy a piece of JavaScript (such as Google Analytics) to every single page in the portal? Up to now, the most common way to accomplish this is to include the JavaScript in your theme. However, this can be really annoying if your site uses multiple themes. So, in this blog, I want to show you how you can create a very...

I've recently been reading Pragmatic Thinking & Learning: Refactor Your Wetware by Any Hunt, Pragmatic Bookshelf, and it has really got me thinking... (Yes, that was pretty lame. HaHaHa!) Actually it got me thinking on "context", "perspective", "metaphors", and in particular the definition of "Pair programming", which struck me as interesting. Pair programming is a highly...

Have you ever had a super freakish problem with the Liferay CSS Not doing what you expected? I mean I love Liferay's new Minifier, it's fast and efficient. But, it's no fun when you have problems. Suppose you have some css: .something-a .something-b,.something-c .something-d,.ie6 .something-e {  ... do this ...}.something-g {  ... do that ...} Looks innocent...

When I was at the European Symposium, I was surprised how many people said to me "Gosh I wish Liferay could do ABC," in which I responded, "But it has -- ever since version X.YZ!"  But I guess part of that is my fault since I don't blog that much about my work. In any case, I just wanted to highlight two features coming out with 5.3 that some people may be interested in. ...

I've seen a tone of requests lately for how to add Expando Tables and Columns programatically during some startup proceedure. The biggest problem seems to be with PermissionChecker. The problem stems from the fact that alot of people are trying to use the ExpandoBridge API to create columns (attributes) during the startup process. The issue with that is that the default...

Suppose that you, a portlet developer, need to develop a FAQ portlet that displays questions and answers and that allows certain users to create/update/delete FAQ entries, i.e., a simple CRUD application. Usually, the first thing that comes in mind is to implement a new Java-based portlet, actually, 2 portlets, one for displaying and a second for managing FAQ entries. Fortunately, Ray...

As part of my work on JSR 314 (JSF 2.0) I've been reviewing the specification, Javadocs, and tag library docs for accuracy. One way I do this is to make examples that test drive what the documentation says JSF 2.0 will do. In Part 1 of this series, I showed how to develop an Ajaxified JSF 2.0 Facelet Composite Component. Now here's Part 2 of my JSF 2.0 Test Drive......

On a recent trip to Colorado I had the opportunity to go panning for gold in a stream and take a tour of a gold mine. There may be a lot of gold in the West Portal (shown below), but rest assured I'm still hooked on Liferay. Although I enjoyed my time out there, it is good to be back home in Sunny, FL.
