Styling Liferay with Themes - Updated to 6.2 with Bootstrap

The Liferay Training team is pleased to announce the release of the 6.2 Styling Liferay with Themes course!

Liferay Portal 6.2 includes some exciting updates for UI developers. Now that Bootstrap is incorporated into the AlloyUI Framework, developing themes is simpler and features new additions to give theme developers more power and flexibility for building sleek and responsive themes. Our new Styling Liferay with Themes course aims to help theme developers learn how to implement these features into their own theme projects.

With this in mind, here are the updated topics that we've added to the Styling Liferay with Themes course:

  • AlloyUI and Bootstrap - With the 6.2 release, AlloyUI has implemented Bootstrap in its framework. This change allows theme developers to utilize Bootstrap scaffolding and classes as well as integrating styles from other Bootstrap themes.
  • SASS - In order to maintain compatibility with SASS and Compass, Bootstrap’s LESS has been converted to SASS. Theme developers can now completely control different aspects of the portal CSS (such as the navbar CSS, button CSS, CSS variables, etc) by modifying the scss files in the theme.
  • Dockbar Update - The dockbar can now be modified as either the traditional dockbar or the split dockbar in the 6.2 Classic theme.
  • Layout Template Update - Explore how theme developers can also create Bootstrap grid-based layout templates and embed layout templates into the theme. Using Bootstrap and custom classes, layout templates can be styled according to theme and packaged into the theme project.
  • Responsive Design - With Bootstrap, implementing a responsive theme becomes faster and easier. This course examines how to utilize the new respond-to mixin, which uses media queries to respond to different mobile devices. The course also includes an overview of the responsive tools provided in the new 6.2 Dockbar.
  • Using the Resources Importer - We explore how to use the resources importer feature to import content and documents. The resources importer can also target the site on which the content will be displayed. With this feature, theme developers can design and control the entire look and feel of their sites.

The first official 6.2 Styling Liferay with Themes training will be held in Philadelphia, PA on August 22nd, 2014. If you’re interesting in learning how to style Liferay with a 6.2 theme, you can register here!
