Liferay Portal: From Zero to Intranet in 10 Minutes

A few weeks ago our CEO proposed a challenge to me: create a document that shows how to create an Intranet in Liferay in 10 minutes.

Here's a demonstration video:

Oh, and the document will be available at the Liferay booth at JavaOne.

Good job Rich!

That was pretty fun to watch.

(PS: Use xvidcap instead of recordMyDesktop, it produces better output, and can record directly to flv.)
Thanks Ray.

Creating this was actually a bit of an adventure. :-)

Xvidcap would crash once about every 20 seconds, so I gave up on that. I actually wound up using a combination of vncrec and Istanbul (only because I only found out about Istanbul after I'd done most of the recording). The weird color flashes all came from the vncrec footage, so I don't think I'm going to use that again to do one of these.

I then spliced it all together in Cinelerra, exported it to Ogg Theora, and then converted that via mencoder to an mpeg for YouTube. The file size difference is really interesting.

Theora: 56.4MB
AVI: 77.8MB
MPEG: 107.7MB

In any case, the whole thing was created entirely in open source, free software--even the music.
Another tool to try, if you want produce flash video, is Wink (http://www.debugmode.com/wink/).

It's allow ballon-mode suggestion box
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the video. It would go from cool to amazingly useful though if it was narrated!
Hey Adam,

Thanks for your comments! If it were narrated, it would probably take longer than 10 minutes. I'm not a fast-talker. :-) I had thought of starting it off with a voice over sounding like that movie preview guy: "In a world, where web sites are hard to build....," etc.

Hey, maybe if we got Alvin the Chipmunk to do it.... :-)

In any case, there's a document floating around which outlines the exact steps. It's due to make its debut at JavaOne, and then should be available hereabouts afterward.
Rich, really cool but it is a pity that the quality of the video image is not good enough to understand easily what is really happening in the video. Do have a better quality original video? The idea is wonderful and I think that it is a really a great marketing tool.
Hey Alvaro!

Yes, I have a much higher quality video. YouTube crunched it down, though if you go out to YouTube and watch it there's a link to view it in higher quality (though it's still small). If you want a higher quality one, let me know and I'll get it to you.
This is pretty neat. Can you send the higher quality video to me as well?
Hey Peter,

Okay, I uploaded it to my document library:

http://www.liferay.com/c/document_library/get_file?p_l_id=745620&folderId=772303&name=DLFE-531.zip

To play this file in Windows (after you unzip it of course), you will need codecs for Windows Media Player which can be found here:

http://www.illiminable.com/ogg/

I uploaded this one because:

a) It's closest to the original (i.e., rendered directly from Cinelerra)
b) It's the smallest file I've been able to create
c) It's in an open source format that is playable anywhere, and the codecs for Windows are easy to install.

I composed the songs myself in 1995. They are Scream Tracker MODs, which I exported to regular sound files to play in the background.

Enjoy!
