I've been working on integrating MySQL Server 8.0 with my Liferay portal (7.1.2) running on Tomcat 9.x. Has anyonwe faced this issue?

MySql 8 was released just before 7.1. There was no time to introduce another full infrastructure testing before release - so MySql8 is not on the compatibility list for Liferay Portal 7.1 (CE). If you want to use MySql 8, I suggest to upgrade. This has the side-benefit of also making bugfixes (potentially security related) and new features for you.
