In Liferay Portal CE 7.3.4 in Document and media, no preview for PDF documents are generated until the upload of almost one DOC, XLS, etc. document.
The environment is installed correctly according with the usual Liferay rules: OpenOffice and GhostScript and ImageMagick are in place and running.
OpenOffice connector and external applications activated in Liferay Portal.
You have to upload almost one  DOC, XLS or similar document to obtain previews and thumbnails also for PDF documents.
Until this first upload of a DOC, XLS or similar document , no preview are generated for PDF documents that you also upload in Document and media.
If you upload at first a PDF document, in the log you get the below error:
"WARN [liferay/document_library_pdf_processor-2][BaseProcessorMessageListener:40] Unable to process file version XXXXX
java.lang.NullPointerException......."
After you upload one  DOC, XLS or similar document, in log you get the below message:
INFO [liferay/document_library_pdf_processor-2][SocketOpenOfficeConnection:114] trying to (re)connect
INFO [liferay/document_library_pdf_processor-2][SocketOpenOfficeConnection:77] connected
Then the previews and thumbnails are generated correctly for PDF documents upload also.
I just opened an issue here: https://issues.liferay.com/browse/LPS-119563
Anyone noticed the same ?
Thank you for comments.

Hi Ivano,
I noticed the same (or similar) issue a few GAs ago, and it seems to be a configuration issue. Please try to go to "Control Panel" -> "External Services", where you should see all your configuration, and without changing anything just click "Save". This is a workaround that fixes thumbnail/preview generation until the portal is restarted once again.

This is definitely a bug and should be fixed by Liferay at some point.

Regards,
KG

Hi Krzysztof,
I confirm that your workaround solve the issue or, as I wrote in my initial post, you can upload a DOC or XLS document after each server restart :-)
I hope the issue I opened can be voted also by you: https://issues.liferay.com/browse/LPS-119563

Best regards,
