Your Liferay Portal instance is unable to contact liferay.com
Hi community
Since a few days we get enclosed message on ourLiferay Portal Community Edition 6.2 CE GA3 (Newton / Build 6202 / January 15, 2015)
Your Liferay Portal instance with host name, 870, is unable to contact https://www.liferay.com. Please check its internet connection and make sure it is able to connect to https://www.liferay.com otherwise your license will become inactive.
We can ping liferay.com from the server instance.
Any hints are highly appreciated
Best regars
Peter

I've not heard of this behavior, nor am I aware of anything that causes it. AFAIK Liferay (and especially Liferay CE) is able to run completely separated from the internet, and there's no license check.
Do you have any additional plugin installed, e.g. from Marketplace? And, to get closer to the root, can you post a screenshot of that message? I wouldn't know where to look for it (other than searching the source for the localization string and work from there)
There is an option to use an internet connection for EE licensing, but you're explicitly referencing CE - this leaves me puzzled.

Two weeks ago TLS 1.0 support was removed in *.liferay.com servers, a announcement was done, see:
In case your server is connecting to liferay.com servers for any reason (CE version should check licenses) but your java version is 6 or 7, you can have problems.
If you are using a old Java version (6 or 7) easiest way to confirm your issue is related to TLS 1.0 changes is to move to Java 8.

Hi Jorge - many thanks for your response -
