This is another one of those: "I thought I understood how this works..." issues.  In 7.0.6 I had used LDAP authentication and I *thought* that when the user successfully authenticated, not only was a user profile created but also the groups that the user was a member of in AD.  But in 7.3.2 I don't see that behavior.   It creates the user but none of the groups.

Am I mis-remembering how it worked?

The answer is no.  Its an issue with the user reference in the Group.   I changed it to  member and that seemed to bring the groups as well.  Must have left the default by accident when I recreated the server
