RE: LibreOffice Online integration
Hi all,
IMHO if Liferay Document Library was to be complemented with LibreOffice Online it would be a very powerfull contender for the Digital Workspace.
As per their website: "LibreOffice Online is a server service built from the main LibreOffice project code which provides display and collaborative visual editing of a range of document types. It does not include any form of file system. To be fully functional, it has to be integrated with file access and authentication provision from an underlying stack of software.
For anything more than casual use it also needs to be deployed with due consideration for load balancing and other scaling issues. As such, LibreOffice Online can be considered an enabling technology for the public cloud of ISPs or the private cloud of enterprises and large organizations, when integrated - for example - with an enterprise file sharing or a groupware solution."

Thanks Fernando,
That sounds like an interesting idea to me.
I personally would see that as an independent application/extension rather than part of Document Library. But may be Document Library only need to provide an extension point for it. Waht do you think? Have you tried to do something like that? Do you have experience with LibreOffice Online? Do you know what is needed for this to work?
Anyways, let me check with the product team if this is aligned with the road map or can be considered.

Hi Milen,
I have no experience with LibreOffice Online but for many years now I heard people complain that web based document sharing tools should also allow document editing. :-)
I agree that it could be an extension, available and developed on the side, somewhat like Sync is an extension of Document Library too.
Cheers

Hi Fernando,
I checked with the Collaboration team and they confirmed third-party online editors are definitely something we are interested in.
In fact for 7.2, we are releasing an Online Editing feature which integrates Google Docs/Sheets/Slides (see LPS-83715 and Alpha 1 release announcement).
As this is something you seem to be interested in, please check it out if you can and provide your feedback in Feedback for Milestone releases
Also Offie365 was planned but will not be released with 7.2 (see LPS-82617, LPS-82618).
I'm still checking if LibreOffice Online was cosidered in the past and if it's on the roadmap. I'll update you once I know more.

Hi Milen,
Thanks. Those are excellent news. The only problem with using cloud editors - correct me if I'm wrong - is that you're sending your content over the net to edit on google/microsoft servers. Security sensitive data on many intranets will make some people avoid that solution.
Anyway, it's good news.

It would be using HTTPS, same way with using Libreoffice Online. I don't know that you could defend one as having different security than another...
Hi David,
It's my understanding that you can run LibreOffice Online in your own servers. For many users that is an important security feature, I believe.

I think the poit Fernando is making is that with solutions hosted by 3rd parties one has to send the content to their cloud/hosting in order to use the editor.
With LibreOffice Online one has to host it on its own. It's more work and hosting costs but all the data stays withing the infra of the owner.
I have a frind running LibreOffice Online with NextCloud for his company as they don't trust Goolgle.

Hi Fernando,
I got confirmation form the product team that LibreOffice Online is something we are willing to take a look at. Can you please open a feature request so we can track it.

Hi Milen,
Should I open it on the WCM Project or in the LPS project?
Fernando

Fernando
Use LPS please.
WCM is for Audience Targeting application (yea I know, it's confusing)

Done: "LPS-91444: As a user, I'd like to edit documents in the DM repo with LibreOffice Online"
