The answer has three dimensions:

  • The compatibility matrix for DXP 7.1 lists Tomcat 9.0 (and is typically a good indicator for what's tested).
  • Tomcat 8.0 has reached its end of life on June 30, days before the release of Liferay 7.1
  • In case you currently run Tomcat 8: Running a second version Tomcat and mounting all on the same Webserver/Loadbalancer means minimal overhead - I don't see any strong reason to continue running an already outdated server component.

The main reason for using tomcat8 is that it is supported on Ubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu 18.04. Since its part of the official distro we have assurance that security issues are being patched and can update tomcat as part of our standard system update procedures.  Would prefer not to use 3rd party repos or snaps.

So far out testing is positive.

Now that Tomcat 8.0 is at its end of life, I'm not sure that this is a safe bet any more.

You're welcome to use Liferay 7.1 on Tomcat 8.0, but as Liferay came out after Tomcat 8's end of life, you might be one of very few people to run this combination.

If you run into issues, prepare to be able to reproduce them on Tomcat 9 before filing them.
