On the Liferay Faces Team, we try to reply to as many posts in the Liferay Faces forums as we can. This has been extremely beneficial for our team and our project. If you're a developer, I want to encourage you to get involved in similar ways in your community by listing some of the benefits the Liferay Faces team has recieved because of our involvment in our forums:
- Helping with issues and problems makes the community happy:
Chris Dailey:
"Hey, it's working! There is much dancing going on here! ...
Thank you so much for seeing this through with me, Neil!"
Yurg Block:
"Hi Vernon,
Thank you very much, it solved the problem.
Cheers mate!"
Christophe Noel:
"Very good news and Wonderful support!"
Paolo Zavalloni:
"Juan, thanks a lot for your support !"
Jobin Mathew:
"Thanks Neil, ... It works"
- Answering questions in the forums helps a lot of people.
Answering a question in the forums doesn't just help the asker. On average, our forum threads get around 8000 views. We can't assume that all those viewers were helped by the thread of course. But what if 10% or even 1% of them solved their problem by reading the thread? A single post could help 100 people!
- Responding to other's questions, suggestions, and issues makes me a better developer.
Since I've had to answer many posts and questions, I have been forced to become a better communicator, coder, and configurer. I've had to contend with difficulties inherent in text-only communication. I've also been compelled to better understand Liferay Faces code, so that I could explain it to others. Lastly, I've had to step into our developers' shoes to understand how they configure and use our product, and getting into the minds of our developers has helped me to see different pain points and potential improvements for Liferay Faces.
- Conversing with our community improves our project.
Many aspects of Liferay Faces have been improved thanks to questions and suggestions from our community. Because of our interaction with community members in the forums, we've clarified our version scheme, planned improvements to our design, determined whichjar
s are necessary to use certain features, fixed conflicts with Primefaces, and increased the quality of our patches and code.
These are some of the main benefits the Liferay Faces Team has seen from our participation in our forums. If you're a developer, I highly recommend that you get similarly involved in your community and see if it doesn't help improve you, your project, and your community.
