When I was at the European Symposium, I was surprised how many people said to me "Gosh I wish Liferay could do ABC," in which I responded, "But it has -- ever since version X.YZ!" But I guess part of that is my fault since I don't blog that much about my work. In any case, I just wanted to highlight two features coming out with 5.3 that some people may be interested in. ...
I've seen a tone of requests lately for how to add Expando Tables and Columns programatically during some startup proceedure. The biggest problem seems to be with PermissionChecker. The problem stems from the fact that alot of people are trying to use the ExpandoBridge API to create columns (attributes) during the startup process. The issue with that is that the default...
Suppose that you, a portlet developer, need to develop a FAQ portlet that displays questions and answers and that allows certain users to create/update/delete FAQ entries, i.e., a simple CRUD application. Usually, the first thing that comes in mind is to implement a new Java-based portlet, actually, 2 portlets, one for displaying and a second for managing FAQ entries. Fortunately, Ray...

As part of my work on JSR 314 (JSF 2.0) I've been reviewing the specification, Javadocs, and tag library docs for accuracy. One way I do this is to make examples that test drive what the documentation says JSF 2.0 will do. In Part 1 of this series, I showed how to develop an Ajaxified JSF 2.0 Facelet Composite Component. Now here's Part 2 of my JSF 2.0 Test Drive......

On a recent trip to Colorado I had the opportunity to go panning for gold in a stream and take a tour of a gold mine. There may be a lot of gold in the West Portal (shown below), but rest assured I'm still hooked on Liferay. Although I enjoyed my time out there, it is good to be back home in Sunny, FL.

Earlier this week, I did a demonstration of Liferay for a potential customer. I think it went well, and for the most part, I was able to show them all of the capabilities of the product in which they were interested. I showed them how good we are with things like private communities, user management, integration, permissions, themes and the dragging/dropping of portlets....

Most of the client (and potential client) locations I've visited in China have been in big, crowded, metropolitan cities. This particular one was different since it was located on the outskirts of one of the largest southern cities. We were visiting their headquarters which was strategically located next to their manufacturing plants. I won't mention how long it...
