At Liferay, we've always believed that innovation is meant to be accessible. For decades, our open source heritage has been the heartbeat of our technology, shaped by a vibrant community of creators, developers, and organizations around the world.

Now, we're taking the next step in how we deliver Liferay.
Starting with the 2026.Q1 release, we are evolving from separate Community Edition (CE) and DXP installations to a single, unified, modular platform. Instead of maintaining different distributions, everyone will run the same core Liferay installation.

Here's how the new model works:

  • All users will activate their installation using an Activation Key. Features are enabled through activation, not through separate downloads or migrations.
  • For our community users, this introduces a simple process to request and apply a free Activation Key. Once applied to your Liferay installation, you'll have access to the same core capabilities previously available in Community Edition - now delivered on the unified platform.
  • Just as importantly, moving from Community-level access to a Liferay DXP subscription no longer requires switching installations or performing a complex migration. If your needs grow, you simply apply a Subscriber Activation Key. Your environment remains the same, your capabilities expand.
  • In addition, non-subscribers will gain access to the first release of each Quarterly Release (for example, 2026.Q1.0, 2026.Q2.0). That means four major feature releases each year, including improvements and security updates, delivered on a predictable schedule.

This unified approach brings greater flexibility while preserving stability. It simplifies how you get started, reduces friction as you grow, and ensures that all users operate on the same architectural foundation.

Importantly, this evolution does not change our commitment to open source. Our source code will continue to be available in the master branch under the LGPL license for anyone who prefers to build directly from it.

We're excited about what this means for our community and customers alike: A simpler path forward, built on the same powerful platform.

Stay tuned for the 2026.Q1 launch.
