Does Liferay Social Office offers any kind of chat features ?
If yes, is it possible to get group and also private messages ?
If not, is there another built in tool to do chat ?
If not, any suggestion of a tool in the market place which offer group and private messages (and that will be maintained) ?

Yes

Group chat:No
Private messages: Yes

If not, any suggestion of a tool in the market place which offer group and private messages (and that will be maintened) ?

There's a Chat app in the Marketplace is maintained. However, if maintenance is a concern for you, you should upgrade to Liferay Portal 7 since Social Office since it's not maintained any more.

Thanks for your quick answer.

You said that Liferay CE Chat is maintained, but I read
Final Version: No new versions will be available for this app. Support for this app will end at the EOSL date.

Are you sure, what does this quote really means ?
